About CounterpointHistoryCounterpoint Systems was founded in 1987 by Robert Katovsky. He spun the Counterpoint out from Complete Computer Services, the predecessor company he founded with partners in the 1970s. Counterpoint Systems was primarily established to provide rights and royalty management software to the music industry. The original product lines were built for the IBM mid range System 3x and AS/400 computers. With the advent of the PC, the product range was expanded to include PC versions of the more comprehensive mid range products, but designed for smaller companies that did not require the full functionality of more expensive solutions. In 1996, Amos Biegun joined Mr. Katovsky to expedite the growth of Counterpoint and to develop new revenue streams by expanding into other industries that also required software for rights management and royalties accounting. These included film, merchandising and general licensing companies. The first non-music-related product developed by Counterpoint was Movie Maestro, a rights monitoring, royalty accounting and auditing system for film production and distribution companies. This system was developed in-house and is considered to be the most comprehensive package of its kind. In 1999, Counterpoint Systems acquired the Pelican Profiles range of licensing software and the 10 person team of the California-based TL Creates, a highly respected product licensing provider, in order to build the licensing business. This tightly knit team continues to produce the software that now dominates the licensing software arena. Counterpoint, a largely London-based operation to this point, then opened a Los Angeles office to capture an already substantial American-based business, as well as to capitalize on new business interest and to accommodate the TL Creates staff. The creation of the LA-based office and the Internet boom, paved the way for Counterpoint to acquire Los Angeles company, Fresh Ground Software in 2000. Fresh Ground developed web-based search engines and exploitation tools, providing a mechanism for publishing content on the web that allows users to search for, sample and select items. The benefit to Counterpoint’s clients was substantial because clients could now secure and publish their information within an integrated Counterpoint system. With headquarters in London and offices in Los Angeles and Northern California, Counterpoint has become multi-national with over 75 employees servicing hundreds of clients in over 40 countries. Among Counterpoint Systems clients are Sony Music, EMI, NHL, MGM, 20th Century Fox, NASCAR, Paramount Pictures, Harley-Davidson, BMG, and the British Film Institute. |
